Navigating Intensity: Finding Balance and Support

Over the past few days and weeks, I have had countless conversations with friends, clients, and strangers about unexpected heaviness or despair. The person usually shares something like, “I feel distraught over this really horrible experience…” And as the discussion continues, the same person will often also bring up, “This really beautiful event also occurred or is on the horizon.”

Life encompasses both significant and subtle challenges that aren’t always openly discussed. Recently, a tea ceremony provided an insightful perspective on how simple rituals can offer comfort and clarity.

Attending a Chao Dao tea ceremony was an experience that emphasized the power of structure and presence. The ceremony, held in a serene setting, involved a small group of participants observing traditional practices with grace and care. The act of pouring tea, typically conventional, was transformed into a profound ritual, highlighting the comfort that can come from structure and mindfulness.

Here are some ideas to help you navigate intensity and find balance:

  1. Make time for stillness: Schedule solo-time in your calendar and stick to it, or find an event that holds you accountable. Use this time to reflect and see what arises. (Join us on Monday, September 9th at 7pm EST for Free We All Feel Community Mindfulness.)

  2. Connect with community who gets it: Engage with others who understand your experience by joining a sports league, book club, or a support group like the We All Feel Support Circle. These spaces allow for deeper connections and mutual support.

  3. Embrace structure in your routine: Structure doesn’t have to be serious. Just as the tea ceremony highlighted, simple routines can offer comfort. Incorporate small, enjoyable habits into your day—such as a morning stretch, lighting a candle while working, or taking an evening walk—to bring a sense of stability and peace.

Finding ways to address and connect with your emotions can help bring balance and comfort during challenging times.
